Golden Features (DJ)

More than half a decade into his career, Australian producer Golden Features has well-and-truly established himself as one of the country’s premier electronic acts amassing over 120 million global streams, one platinum and four gold records to his name. Over the years Tom Stell’s musical evolution has seen the producer push boundaries in aesthetic and sound revealing more of himself to fans and slowly unmasking himself in the process.

Stell instantly became a festival and airwave staple with his debut EP, driven by the success of the Nicole Millar-featuring ‘Tell Me’. Never one to rely on a formula, he developed his sound further on the following EP XXIV which housed two of his biggest songs ‘Telescope’ with K. Flay and ‘No One’ with Thelma Plum. That was only to be topped by standalone drop ‘Wolfie’ featuring Julia Stone, a track that has since had over 20 million streams.

Stell had already become a firm favourite in his home country, selling out his 2015 national tour, but the rest of the world was catching. He drew praise from the likes of electronic music heavyweights like Porter Robinson before taking his shows to the US. He played large-scale electronic music festivals including HARD Summer and Holy Ship.

The debut album was Stell’s next challenge and it’s one that he painstakingly crafted. SECT arrived in 2018, almost two years after his previous release, and showcased an immersive sound that emphasised the journey rather than singular destinations.

“I’m never going to pander,” says Stell, adding, “SECT was an exercise in not being tied down to one thing or one sound.” He wanted the record to showcase a purposeful evolution and the result was a “concept record” that needed to be devoured whole rather than in chunks; a rarity in modern dance music. The album reached #1 on the iTunes Chart and also nabbed the coveted triple j feature album.

With the debut album on hand, he developed a live show that took the Golden Features experience even higher. The SECT headline tour saw him sell over 15,000 tickets across six shows. He also closed out the 2018/2019 edition of Falls Festival with a triumphant victory lap that left a lasting impression. SECT lent itself to the live arena as Stell took the opportunity to take fans on a trip through dark, pulsating beats and dizzying experimentation. “The sets need to flow like an opera,” he says. “It needs sections that are down-beat. It needs to flow and take you on a journey.”

The album was a personal work that saw Stell allow very few collaborators into his world. It had just one featured vocalist with the producer admitting he’s, “very particular about how things are done.” A drive to keep creating music that sounds new, however, has seen him enter a collaborative stage of his career that has already resulted in projects with The Presets and ODESZA plus a production credit on Katy Perry’s 2017 record Witness.

“Before [The Presets] I’d never really worked with anyone else for an extended period of time,” he says, speaking about 2019 EP Raka. The project featured some of Stell’s boldest production to date matching the vocal energy of Julian Hamilton with vibrant, all-encompassing beats. Simultaneously Stell was embracing more collaborative work, this time however with dynamic US electronic duo Odesza.

The two acts had been on the festival circuit together a few times, notably “getting slowly seduced by each other’s music,” on Groovin The Moo in 2016. After ODESZA played Laneway Festival in 2018, however, they rented an isolated house together in New South Wales and started aimlessly working on material.

As always, Stell is already looking ahead to his next creative turn. He has been reinvigorated once again by time immersing himself in the Berlin techno scene. There’s a clear direction for what he wants to do yet, not that anybody will be able to guess it.

“You lose scope of your work the more you work on it,” Stell says. “I’m all about getting the ideas down quick…getting the heart of the song in it and then going in to refine the song until it shines.”

Stell’s next move is a mystery until it’s unveiled but there’s one thing we know for sure. He’s always looking for a detour into the next unexplored space of electronic music.

Lastlings

Lastlings have announced the follow up to their much loved debut album First Contact. Their second album Perfect World is out everywhere June 23rd 2023 on Liberation Records and Rose Avenue Records.

On Perfect World:
Perfect World is a journey into adulthood. This record is a diary. These stories represent our early 20s. It is a journey to finding independence. It’s probably the most vulnerable music we have ever made. We want this album to let people know that they aren’t alone and that they don’t need to rush in life, to take things slow. It is a reminder that you will be okay being on your own and that the next time you say something to yourself along the lines of “In a Perfect World”, to think of the positives in our lives.

The announce arrives via an album trailer shot in Death Valley last year and a fresh new single Noise:

“Noise is about reminiscing on an old relationship. The good memories. Talking late at night. Going to raves together. Dancing. All the arguing and making up. All the… Noise.”

Currently based in Melbourne, the Japanese-Australian siblings found inspiration for their new works in the studio on the Gold Coast.

Their 2020 debut First Contact continues to be well-loved around the world. An album where the duo looked to Tokyo and its surroundings, taking inspiration from their heritage and the country’s futuristic charm. This time, they build on this curiosity and move towards the unknown. Expect sweeping soundscapes felt within your chest, expressed through a visually surreal palette.

Since First Contact, Lastlings have taken their music to the world. Completing their debut, sold-out run of Australia, and North America, plus a unique stop at Sundream in Mexico, playing beachside sets with their label heads RÜFÜS DU SOL. Lastlings recently completed an LA weekender for 88rising’s Head In The Clouds event. Lastlings’ live shows grow more complex with hauntingly beautiful visual elements to complement their sound.

Perfect World is an ambitious work combining sound, art and reflection. It’s an auspicious first glimpse into a universe, built by Amy and Josh Dowdle, and a promise of what’s yet to come.

Sam Alfred

Australian electronic artist Sam Alfred has rapidly gained attention with his distinctive sound, blending jazz-tipped house, deep cuts, and UK garage, with a signature house and techno vibe reminiscent of the 90s. His standout ROADBLOCKS EP, released on the globally recognized tastemaker label ‘Running Back’, has received widespread acclaim. In 2024, Sam’s remix of ‘Foam’ by Grammy-nominated band *Royel Otis* further showcased his forward-thinking production style.

Sam’s collaborative portfolio includes celebrated artists like LB Labat, Lawrence Guy, DJ Boring, Kyle Starkey, and Club Angel, highlighting his versatility. Globally, he has sold out shows across Australia, Asia, and Europe/UK, and performed at prestigious festivals such as Forbidden Fruit, Fly Open Air, PollerWiesen, and Pitch Music & Arts. A memorable performance at AVA Belfast Boiler Room solidified his presence in the electronic music community.

In 2024, Sam also took centre stage as the main support for Fred Again during his Australia tour, further establishing his position as a major force in the electronic scene.

Juicy Romance

The Scandalizer from down under, Juicy Romance is the Australia-born, London-based
producer, vocalist and lyricist, promising steamy indulgence and dance floor hedonism. From her

roots as a

violin-playing, rock-skipping, small-town country girl, Juicy has evolved into an
island-hopping, club-rocking party queen, infecting the modern world with her playful blend

of bouncy “pop-turned-club” bangers, as coined by Mixmag.

Her productions and DJ sets build a dance floor environment where clubbers can experience the
best of both worlds; sprinklings of sexy, bad-bitch vocals, over ass-shaking, earth-quaking club

floor fillers.

Fittingly, she recently supported The Dare for his sold out Sydney and Melbourne headline shows
and completed a 15 date European tour with Boiler Room at the start of 2025. On the cusp of her
North American debut, Juicy’s musical and lyrical explorations are set to send the world into a
crazed meltdown symptomised by high temperatures, racing heartbeats and addiction to the

Dancefloor.

Mel Blue

Mel Blue are an electronic trio who fuse nostalgia and modernity, crafting dance music imbued with a combination of reflection and forward-thinking creativity. Splitting their lives between Melbourne and London, Oscar Sharah, Jacob Siles, and Luke Gerber have built a solid reputation for their euphoric hybrid dance music. At its core their sound is melancholy and introspective, yet delicately balanced with wistful textures and filtered through a rose-tinted lens.

Born out of the vibrant artistic scenes of Sydney and Melbourne, Mel Blue underwent a transformative evolution when the trio relocated to London in 2023. Their resulting album, ‘nomorejacketsplease’, is an evocative reflection of this pivotal move, due for release on Nettwerk in September.

Infused with underground bass influences (jungle, dubstep, DnB, UKG, and breakbeat) the album captures both the excitement and uncertainty of starting anew in a foreign city. It’s a bold stylistic shift from 2023’s ‘Sanctuary Point’ and is ultimately a story of redemption, friendship, and growth, narrated through fast tempos, atmospheric synths, and danceable yet contemplative soundscapes.
